History of Yangtze and the Three Gorges Dam
The three gorges dam is an engineering marvel and a disaster at the same time.
With the current controversy surrounding the dam and floods in China, here's a look at some history. A documentary made by Journeyman Pictures 10 years ago looked at the damage caused by the dam which controls the Yangtze river, with rare footage from China and interviews with scientists and geological experts who warned that more disasters could happen.

Ruins along the banks where the river used to run.
The fertile banks of the river is still home to over 200 million people who rely on its future.
In an earier documentary, Dam of Corruption (1999), Journeyman estimated that the dam would displace 1.13 million people by 2014, including 113,000 farmers.
In 2020 the number of people affected by the dam could be as much as 19 million. The dam has to manually release huge amounts of water to control floods and prevent a collapse. More controversy behind the dam and possible corruption emerges, see Behind the dam with Simone Gao.
