Top 10: Cartoon Cars

Cartoons are where the really exciting cars are found. TV cars are cool, movie cars are awesome, but animated vehicles don't have to worry about safety, fuel efficiency or obeying the laws of physics. Check out our favourite cartoons cars of all time (and enjoy some classic cartoon clips while you're at it).

Canyonero - The Simpsons

The Simpsons are famous for their wacky behaviour, but they've had some pretty awesome cars, too. The Canyonero is a red, SUV-style car and can be spotted series nine, episode 15, titled The Last Temptation of Krust. The Canyonero was endorsed by Krusty the Clown and apparently "smells like a steak and seats thirty five".  It also boasts its very own song that was sung by none other than Hank Williams Jr.  How cool is that?

Flintstones Car - The Flintstones

There aren’t many children who don’t have at least one memory of watching Fred Flintstone use his legs to propel his car forward. The car has been part of popular television since 1992 and has been reproduced in toy replicas and even full sized collectible models. To this day, it's unclear how Fred's bare feet coped with braking.

Ectomobile - The Real Ghostbusters

Ectomobile (Ecto-1) - Sarsota, Florida
The Ectomobile is a re-designed hearse the Ghostbusters use in their mission to combat spooks, ghouls and nasties. While the original Ectomobile (fondly remembered as Ecto-1) from the 1984 movie Ghostbusters wasn’t animated, the version from the movie's follow-up saturday morning cartoon was. ‘The Real Ghostbusters’ launched the Ectomobile into full technicolor animated glory. For that, we are eternally grateful.

Thundertank - Thundercats

thundertank
The Thundertank is an essential and near-unbeatable weapon in the arsenal of the Thundercats. Built out of an old spaceship, the Thundertank is equipped with a drill, claws, jaws capable of crushing pretty much anything, lasers and a sophisticated defence system. It may be slow and you certainly wouldn't want to take your driving lessons in it, but the Thundertank is still cool enough to make #4 on this list.

Turtle Van - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

TMNT van
Who could overlook a van that looks (a bit) like a turtle? While it isn’t quite as awesome as some of the other cars on this list, it’s still very cool. More importantly, it’s been around and loved since 1987 when the original television series first aired. The van is so awesome that it has actually been replicated as a real car several times, despite the fact the animated version was only good for flinging 6 foot mutant amphibians into battle with ninjas.

Lightning McQueen - Cars

lightning mcqueen
Despite being less than ten years old, Lightning McQueen is one of the most popular animated cars ever. McQueen is a race car with a flashy red paint job and an attitude to match. The car is featured as the main character in Disney/Pixar animated film ‘Cars’ and its sequel. With two movies, games and literally thousands of merchandise spinoffs, there isn’t a child today who wouldn’t recognise McQueen.

Batmobile - Batman

Batman has long been a favourite superhero of entire generations of comic book and animation lovers. The Batmobile is one of the coolest and most unique cars ever to come out of animated fiction. There are loads of versions of the Batmobile, but all feature an all-black paint job and a ton of special accessories. The Batmobile is effortlessly cool, it's the ultimate superhero ride.

Bumblebee - Transformers

[Hasbro] Bumblebee - Transformers: Prime (Alt Mode)

What could be more awesome then a car that turns into a talking robot alien? Not much. Despite Bumblebee's recent star performance in the movie version of Transformers he’s been animated and popular since the 1980s when the first generation of Transformers toys, comics and cartoons were first released. Today, Bumblebee has a toy line and more than eight names in different languages.

Mach 5 - Speed Racer

The Mach 5 is one of the oldest and most iconic cartoon cars on the planet. However, it did not make the #1 spot for one reason; many children today have no idea who or what Speedracer is. There was a move adaptation of the original cartoon not so long ago, but it was awful.

Mystery Machine - Scooby Doo

The final cartoon car on this list is the Mystery Machine. While there are a lot of cars that are cooler, faster or more handy when battling evil than the Mystery Machine, none can match its duration on the screen. The Mystery Machine has been on television pretty much non-stop since Scooby Doo first aired in 1969.
