Gaming System Use That's Actually Good for You

If you want to live a healthier lifestyle, most people know they need to eat a well-balanced diet containing the recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables and grains and engage in regular exercise. While most people are aware of this information, some may find it hard to go to the gym because of a busy schedule or hectic lifestyle. If you don’t have time to go to the gym or if you are looking for fun workout activities to do at home, think about getting in shape with a fitness gaming console. There are a variety of gaming consoles such as the Wii Fit or Kinect for Xbox that each caters to individuals interested in health and fitness. If you don’t own one of these systems, take advantage of Christmas discounts and be sure to purchase your fitness gaming console while it is on sale.

One of the most talked about fitness gaming consoles is the Wii Fit. This family-friendly system includes a host of interactive games such as tennis, bowling, baseball, boxing and golf. Additional games can be purchased to use with the system as well. While most interactive games work with the Wii controllers, some games such as Daisy Fuentes Pilates and EA Sports Active, for instance, require the use of the Wii balance board. The Wii balance board resembles an early 90s step-aerobic board and requires the user to stand on it in order for the computer to recognize and transfer their motions onto the television screen.

The Wii Fit console retails for between $200 and $300 depending on the retailer. If you opt to go with the Wii Fit over other fitness gaming consoles, be sure to purchase the system in a bundle that includes the balance board. If you purchase the balance board separately, you could end up spending close to $100 on the separate purchase.

Another popular fitness gaming console is the Kinect for Xbox. This system supports several interactive fitness games including Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, The Biggest Loser and the ever-popular Zumba Fitness. Similar to the Wii, games are played using the system’s motion detectors. The Kinect uses infrared sensors to register your movements and voice sensors to hear what you are saying. Some people prefer this gaming console because it’s hands free, allowing individuals to focus on their workout rather than where they are positioning their hand-held controller. In order to get the system to register your movements, users need a wide area of space to move around in, so be sure to set up your system in a large space.

In order to use the Kinect accessory, you must first purchase an Xbox gaming unit. Once you have purchased the unit, which usually retails for between $300 and $400, simply attach the Kinect to the gaming unit. Like the Wii system, it is always better to purchase the gaming console in a bundle that includes the Kinect. If you must purchase a Kinect separately, be prepared to pay an additional $130.
