Hollywood superstars, millionaire playboys and celebrity names are not shy of spending a few bob when it comes to celebrating and would not let turning 40 get in the way of having a good time. Here’s five 40-somethings who hit the headlines with their own celebrations:
One of the more secretive offerings, the Wikileaks founder was determined to celebrate his 40th birthday in style, despite having the unusual party outfit accessory of an electronic tag around his ankle courtesy of his bail conditions during ongoing attempts to extradite him to Sweden on sexual assault charges. The star-studded bash was held behind the confines of a marquee at Ellingham Hall where he was under house arrest, with guests apparently given specific instructions on where to land their helicopters to ensure maximum discretion. Invites are reported to have been sent to big names such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and Oprah Winfrey.
He may have 99 Problems, but his age ain’t one. The blinged out rapper didn’t shy away from turning 40, splashing his cash on a private jet to fly his friends out to the Dominican Republic and putting them up in luxury holiday accommodation when they arrived. He even took to the mic during the night, but this was no embarassing dad on the karaoke machine after a couple of pints too many, he collaborated with Alicia Keys and P Diddy to perform smash hit Empire State of Mind. Nice.
When it comes to growing old gracefully, supermodel Naomi Campbell is proof enough that you can still look stunning even into your 40s. Maybe her controversial behaviour hasn’t always showed such grace or maturity, but that’s another story. Campbell, with billionaire boyfriend Vladislav Doronin at her side, didn’t book any old party band for her bash in Cannes in 2010, she hired chart stars Black Eyed Peas for a 45 minute set.
Kylie’s younger sister may be the picture of sophistication on screen, but that doesn’t mean she can’t keep her feet on the ground with a pub crawl on public transport for her birthday, getting boozed up on a tram in Australia. OK, maybe it was a bit more high-brow than that, but it was the same principle. Dannii enjoyed a private party on board the luxurious Colonial Tramcar Restaurant in Melbourne, complete with cupcake stack and video messages from celebrity pals including Simon Cowell.
If Mariah’s small-but-glam 40th birthday bash proved one thing, it’s that you have to get the cake right, otherwise you might as well not bother. Not content with flying his bride out to Barbados to enjoy a luxury dinner party with her closest friends and decorated with hundreds of pink and lavender balloons, loving hubby Nick Cannon even made sure her favourite cake was flown out from New York too. Yellow with chocolate frosting, in case you were wondering.
