Gasland: A Movie Review

A new movie by Josh Fox will be available on HBO soon. It's called “Gasland” and it's about hydraulic fracturing. Many people aren't aware of what hydraulic fracturing is and could miss the point of the movie. A brief explanation is that hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is a natural way to extract gas from the ground. There are different ways to take this approach to drilling. One example is horizontal hydraulic fracturing, which extracts the natural gas by “tapping” into shale deposits.

Should We Worry About Fracking?


During the extraction of natural gas from the soil of the earth, natural water can become contaminated. It is important that natural water is protected and legislation has already been put in effect to support that. The FRAC Act holds companies accountable and makes them detail what chemicals they use while working with water. If society doesn't know what chemicals are used in water, then nobody is safe from water contamination. This movie shows that after fracking, some people are unable to use their own water again for years, if ever.

Just one well can be fracked several times using anywhere from 1-8 million gallons of water. That results in an enormous amount of water that is exposed to chemicals, intentionally or unintentionally. After a person understands the process of fracking, then they may be able to understand the motive behind this movie. The people who share their stories could be any of us.
