Five of the World's Most Extravagant Parties
Oh to be rich…Some people know how to party and some people really know how to party. Of course, it helps if you have a few billion in the bank. The lifestyles of the rich and famous are awash with glitz, glamour and expensive parties at the drop of the hat. Here are five of the best:
The Sultan of Brunei’s 50th birthday party, Brunei, 1996, $27.2m
The Sultan of Brunei didn't just turn 50 gracefully, he marked his half century with one of the most extravagant celebrations the world has ever seen. Reportedly costing a cool $27.2 million, the Sultan roped in none other than Michael Jackson to perform live, while his guests tucked into champagne and caviar. Well, you wouldn’t expect anything less from the world’s richest man, would you?
Barack Obama inauguration celebration, 2009, $160m
Well you're not gonna let your promotion to the position of most powerful man in the world go by without a suitable soiree are you? President Obama celebrated in style with a series of bashes for 240,000 people that apparently ran up bills of $160 million. Recession? Pah!
Royal Wedding, London, 2011, £20m
The eyes of the world were on Wills and Kate when they tied the knot last year - and they certainly didn’t disappoint in the glamour stakes. But all that regal style doesn’t come cheap you know. Kate’s designer dress alone was a drop in the ocean at around £250,000, security cost £7million, another £3m went on street decorations and such like, while the Royal Family themselves and the Middletons footed the bill for the actual nuptials and the fun bits.
Atlantis the Palm resort opening party, Dubai, 2009, £15m
There’s one way to show the world you’re not worried about the global property crash, and that’s by hosting one of the glitziest - and priciest - launch bashes ever seen. The 2,000-strong guestlist included such A-listers as Robert De Niro, Denzel Washingon, Shirley Bassey and Richard Branson, supping champers and tucking into lobster while Kylie Minogue entertained the crowds ahead of a huge fireworks display which was apparently visible from space. The lavish unveiling was a snip compared to the £1 billion it cost to actually build the six star resort, based on a stunning man-made island.
P Diddy’s 40th birthday party, New York, 2009, $3m
Never one to mince his words, Sean ‘P Diddy’ Coombs proudly declared his own birthday bash the “party of the century.” Of course, with a bankroll of his size he was never going to be short of 40th birthday ideas, and he certainly did it in style taking over the Grand Ballroom of New York’s famed Grand Plaza Hotel. Never one to miss a business opportunity either, the hip-hop star-turned-entrepreneur’s own vodka company sponsored the party.
